Project Management expert Adam Niewęgłowski, the Head of PMO at SPOC gives a short interview about his recent speaking competition at the PMPIADA event in Poznan.

‘’If you want to buy a cheap and a good thing, you have to buy two things – one cheap, the other good’’

Is the translation from the Polish saying  –

“Jeśli chcesz kupić rzecz tanią i dobrą… musisz kupić dwie rzeczy – jedną tanią, drugą dobrą”

This was the opening line for Adam Niewęgłowski’s speech on Quality Management at the Project Management Event – PMPIADA.

Adam took the 3rd place prize in the speaking competition. He was competing against other PM Professionals in the highly regarded event which ran in Poznan for the 3rd year.

PMPIADA – A Brief Summary

Firstly, the name PMPIADA. This derives from the Polish word – Olimpiada, meaning Olympics. The event certainly does have a competitive spirit too.

Ten Project Management specialists come together to deliver 10 different 15 minute, TedX style speeches. Each competitor covers one of the ten chapters of the PMBoK, a book in its 6th Edition and the flagship publication from the Project Management Institute (PMI), a leading not-for-profit professional membership association for the project management profession.

The PMBoK covers 10 key project management knowledge areas, deeply associated with successful project delivery. These include :

  1. Project Integration Management
  2. Project Scope Management
  3. Project Schedule Management
  4. Project Cost Management
  5. Project Quality Management
  6. Project Resource Management
  7. Project Communications Management
  8. Project Risk Management
  9. Project Procurement Management
  10. Project Stakeholder Management

An Introduction to Adam and what he Talked about at the 2018 PMPIADA Event

Adam is a senior member of the SPOC ServiceNow Project Management Team. Immensely knowledgeable in IT Project Management activities and holds many Industry recognised certifications. These include; Project Management Professional, Prince2 Foundation, Foundation Agile Project Management & Managing Successful Programmes Certificate.

Adam has many years of practical and theory based experience and worked for Global Companies – GSK, Ciber and Atos before joining SPOC’s ServiceNow Project Team.

At the PMPIADA, Adam was speaking about the importance of Quality Management for delivering a successful project.

The Important Message of Quality Management in Project Management

Following his success, the Blog team interviewed Adam to understand his post-competition mood and what he made of the PMPIADA meeting.

He was in high spirits, satisfied with the event and his own performance, especially as Quality Management was his second choice subject. He originally requested to deliver his content on Project Communication, another area of expertise.

Adam was returning for his 2nd competitive performance, after delivering a speech in the 2017 edition of the competition.

Adam told us that last year had a different feel as it was an open event, meaning the conference attracted a different demographic. ‘The audience in 2017 was a blend of project management professionals, people who were starting their adventure with project management and students’

In 2017, the event also took place on April Fool’s Day and Adam captured the spirit of the day with his interesting rendition of Harry Potter related Project Schedule Management. ‘At the 2018 event, I was surprised that a number of people remembered me and my Harry Potter speech from 2017. During another PMI Poland Chapter Poznań event, one person even told me that they still use the phrase ‘Crystal Ball’. A term I used in 2017, when project managers rely on guesswork instead of preventative planning and preparation.’

2018 was a different affair, the event was specifically aimed at working professionals and Adam took a more serious stance to encourage people to focus on Quality Management throughout the entire Project Management Process.

3 Golden Takeaways For Quality Management when managing an IT Project

We asked Adam – ‘If you can ask people to remember 3 things from your speech, what would they be?’

‘That’s rather simple. My speech was structured around the questions – Why?, How? & What? also known as the Golden Circle, a term coined by Simon Sinek.

I stated that these three questions should be used throughout the project. They help to keep perspective on the project in relation to its purpose. Doing so allows you to better understand the Quality Management needs for the project.

What’s next for Adam?

You were speaking for the 2nd time at the PMPIADA, what’s next?

‘I would be happy to return next year to speak again and to try and improve my placing. Of course, it’s not just about the competition, the 2 day event is very good for many reasons, such as the project management simulation games, and the setup.

PMPIADA Networking & Enjoying the Project Management Event

I would also be interested in trying my hand as a speaker at the New Trends in Project Management Event (NTPM) taking place in Gdansk next April. I actually took part in the ‘Oxford-style debate’ at the 2018 event and it was a really enjoyable experience.

After the debate, I was asked by the organisation team if I would consider being a speaker at NTPM in 2019. I’m certainly going to consider submitting my application!’
